Everywhere in the world migrants can experience disproportionate harm and losses in times of disasters. Factoring migrant communities in DRR and DRM policies and practices is key to reduce their vulnerability, and may equally result in increased resilience and faster recovery for home and host communities. Different stakeholders — Governments, international organizations, civil society and private sector actors — have a fundamental role to play in reducing risks and strengthening the resilience of migrants and their families. The state-led Migrants in Countries in Crisis Initiative, co-chaired by the Governments of the Philippines and the United States, convenes all relevant stakeholders to develop a set of voluntary guidelines and effective practices to assist and protect migrants before, during and after a disaster occurs. This panel will be the opportunity to present effective practices put in place by migrants’ countries of origin and of destination to overcome challenges to the inclusion of migrants in disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery efforts.
