Since 2010, UNISDR and partners have mobilized political commitment to building resilience through the Making Cities Resilient Campaign (MCR) and have so far (January 2015) engaged close to 2,400 cities that have committed to implement the Ten Essentials for Building Resilience.
Many partners also aim to expand their support to cities as part of their contribution towards the UN SG’s Climate Summit. Specific commitments are being formulated in preparation for the 3rd UN World Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan March 2015 and the implementation of a post 2015 framework for disaster risk reduction. It’s expected that the Sustainable Development Goals and the preparations of the 3rd UN Habitat conference in 2016 will catalyze even further efforts in this regard and will reinforce an integrated approach to disaster risk reduction, climate action and sustainable development.
While many processes surrounding urban resilience are ongoing, critical opportunities for support or partnerships are not always seized by local governments because of inaccessibility and lack of awareness.
To ensure that a comprehensive array of tools, information, services and support is available to cities – either through bilateral and partner support or through private sector, the concept of a Resilient Cities e-xchange’ has been anticipated.
The platform aims to provide a consolidated space that makes accessing support and partnership opportunities possible for cities and related stakeholders that provide public services. At the same time, it aims to consolidate information on cities to facilitate the work of other stakeholders working to advance the urban resilience agenda.
This e-xchange’ will provide a platform for local governments, NGO’s and and the private sector to share experiences, sound practice, tools, methods and services, and for cities that need it, discovery of these practices, tools and services which will be an added advantage.
